Rollin’ On Live February Broadcast Featured Three RV and Campground Experts

On Thursday, February 1st, our Rollin' On Live Special Episode hosted by Jeff Johnston, featured guest appearances by Rick Kessler, Managing Editor of RVBusiness Magazine and Woodall's Campground Management Magazine. Also featured was Bob Zagami, Executive Director of New England RV Dealer's Association and Principal Consultant at RV Insights.

RVBusiness Magazine keeps its fingers on the pulse of the RV Industry and brings top stories to you every day through RVBusiness.com. Rick can be found at most RV events finding those important stories to share with you. An RVer himself, Rick Kessler is the managing editor for RVBusiness and Woodall's Campground Management, two trade magazines covering the RV and campground industries.

Bob Zagami, an active RVer for 40 years, is closely tied to the New England States and is very familiar with challenges RVers face ranging from finding suitable campground space to working with RV dealers. Bob also conducts his 'Introduction to RVs' and 'The RV Lifestyle' seminars at the Boston RV & Camping Expo and other New England RV consumer events. These seminars are always very well attended and enjoyable. RV Pro recently interviewed Bob Zagami about the state of the RV industry in New England and what he sees as the challenges and opportunities for the industry moving forward. You can read that here -  RV Pro Magazine.

Here are some of the questions we tackled!

How important do you think it is to have an electric surge protector on your RV? Rick says when he upgrades his RV and has more electronics, he will certainly have one. Bob agrees. With the sophistication of devices in new RVs, it's a must! If you don't have one, Jeff suggests an alternative.

With the rise of popularity of true vintage RVs, are existing campgrounds seeing them as a problem? Some older RVs are not allowed in campgrounds. Our pros explore both sides of this tricky question.

From what you see from the campground and the consumer site, what is that one thing a campground can do to improve? Bob Zagami provided a very interesting perspective and answer. Listen and see what you think.

When using a state or national park, do you see these parks anywhere close to keeping up to modernization? These parks were not built for today's RV and is still a big issue. Listen for more insights to this question.

What is the importance of campgrounds and RV Dealers working together? In New England, NERVDA is driving developing a synergy between the campground industry and RV Dealer industry which makes a much better experience for the consumer. Rick says it's happening more often now.

Do most of these campgrounds provide their campers with access to a mobile RV service guy? They don't usually provide it upon checking in but they can provide it when necessary. Rick shares a story on this subject. Bob sees it as a great opportunity for campgrounds to hire RV Techs to be on-site.

When campgrounds come up for sale, is there a demand for campground ownership right now? Well, the answer is yes and no. Bob would like to see more real estate people involved as a campground would be a solid investment.

Two Gals Enjoy their First ‘Harvest Hosts’ Experience

On our trip home from Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, this October, Laurie and I and our Boston Brood decided to stop at our first Harvest Hosts location, Whitebarrel in Christiansburg, Virginia.

Harvest Hosts is a collection of unique places across the country where you can stay with your RV for free! You must be a member of Harvest Hosts to view the database and details.

We met John and Paula Adams who were also there as Harvest Hosts members and we hit if off right away! There are several great reasons to become a member of this organization which we elaborate on in this video.

2017 In Review

As in past years we open our new year with what is now the annual RVBusiness RV Of The Year show from The RVMH Hall Of Fame Museum in Elkhart, Indiana.

The 2017 awards show presented some challenges right from the start with part of our crew getting there the day of the show rather than two days early due to an East Coast snow storm.

But that wasn’t the end of it, it turns out our program co-host Jeff Johnston was stuck in Oregon due to a bad ice storm and never made it to the awards show. Fortunately, we had Ron Stryker, a DJ and program director from radio station 103.9 “The Bear” , join Colleen Bormann, our other co-host from our local ABC station, and… the show went on.

2017 seemed to be the year of smaller trailers as was obvious with the Airstream Base Camp winning top honors as RV Of The Year.

Jeff Johnston had an opportunity to test quite a few of these new ultra-lite trailers this year including the Jayco Jay Feather and the Forest River R-Pod followed by the Lance 1475.

2017 also was a year that brought out some new retro-vintage trailers. One which Jeff took out for a few days was the Gulfstream Vintage Cruiser.

Then Jeff turned his camera to a ‘new’ vintage trailer called the 'Thom Thumb'. Yes I did say new-vintage as this is a new trailer built from the ground up to exact original trailer specs.

EarthCruiser

Then from small trailers, we turned our attention to serious off-road RVing with an in-depth look at the Earth Cruiser. Jeff also had a chance to see what goes into building this rugged beauty.

From RV’s to RV destinations, our friend and radio host John Dipietro took us along on his week-long adventure to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina and showed how much fun a grown up can have.

2017 also gave us an opportunity to introduce Mark and Dawn Polk… the folks behind RV Education 101. For over 30-years Mark and Dawn have been teaching us just about everything we need to know about RV’s with their books and video educational tools. If you’re looking at how to maintain, repair or even drive your RV… look no further.

So this show wraps up our 2017 season and we look forward to having you all join us again in 2018.

RV Education 101 – Portable Solar Systems

With more and more people using electronic devices and spending more time ‘off-the- grid’, so to speak, many RVer’s interest and demand for RV solar systems has increased. If you don’t own a large motorhome of trailer with lots of roof space, where to mount those solar panels becomes a problem. Well… was a problem until…

Open House Overview, Nexus RV, Roadmaster and Zamp Solar in this Rollin’ On TV Show

Open House Overview

This week, on our next- to- the –last- show of the year, we conclude our annual visit to the Elkhart, Indiana RV Industry Open House. As we have described before, this event is a non-organized, impromptu gathering of virtually every RV manufacturer in the country. The event is outdoors, it’s big and exciting with a ‘state fair, carnival atmosphere.’ And what still fascinates me is that there is no-one person or organization in charge. Every manufacturer rents a piece of land from farmers, companies or whomever has land available in the area and sets up their own display. It has to be one of the most successful, unorganized events in the country.

This year, along with all the new models of travel trailers and motorhomes, there was a large number of smaller ultra-lite camping and travel trailers from old established manufacturers and even some new companies. The results….. a lot of interesting new products from retro looking models to ultra-modern European themed trailers. In short, I think whatever your taste in RV trailer design you’re going to find something that will get your attention this coming season.

NEXUS RV

Nexus RV has been around for some time now building high-quality motorhomes with factory-direct sales. The success of this company is a story in itself and one we may bring to you on a future show.

During the Elkhart Open House, we asked our RV dealer expert Bob Zagami to pay a visit to Nexus and talk with company founders, Claude Donati and Dave Middleton about the company’s decision to start selling through RV dealers and how it effects past, current and future buyers.

While at the company, Bob had a chance to check out their 2018 model lineup including the all-new super-C diesel model called the Wraith which is now available in 3 different floor plans. For more information on the Wraith and Nexus RV visit: www.nexusrv.com

Roadmaster Inc.

Roadmaster Inc is well known for its line of high quality tow bars and towing accessories. In the past year they have introduced a whole new design for a spare tire carrier. As usual, the Roadmaster design team seems to have thought out the problem of not just carrying a spare tire but of also how to handle that heavy spare when needed. Check out the video and see for yourself how simple the whole operation is.

RV Education 101 “Portable Solar Systems’

With more and more people using electronic devices and spending more time ‘off-the- grid’, so to speak, many RVer’s interest and demand for RV solar systems has increased. If you don’t own a large motorhome of trailer with lots of roof space, where to mount those solar panels becomes a problem. Well… was a problem until companies like Zamp Solar created functional portable solar systems.

This week Mark and Dawn of RV Education 101 show us just how practical and simple it is to set up your RV for portable solar panel use. Mark also explains the basics of how solar systems work and how to figure out what size system you’ll need to meet your requirement
