Getting the Right RV the First Time

By that, we mean getting the wrong trailer or motorhome for your needs. That is easier to do than you think.

Let’s face it, when first-time shopping for a new RV, there are lots of forces pulling you in various directions, such as that salesperson who wants to sell you....today. Or you like the way a certain unit looks, which is important, but only makes up about a third of what you should be seriously considering. Our emotions can also sway us in the wrong direction.

With so many categories of RVs on the market today we decided to have our expert, Mark Polk from RV Education 101, give us a lesson on what’s available and how to find out which model is right for you. Then, when you go to an RV show or local dealer, you go in prepared to look at what ‘you want and need’ it will help make your RV buying experience and ultimately RV lifestyle experience the fun thing you envisioned in the first place.

Towable and Motorized

Towable Tent trailer, RV TV Show, types of rvsStarting with towables, the smallest and least expensive is the folding or pop-up trailer.

Folding, Pop-up or Tent Trailers

Folding, pop-up trailers or tent trailers range from 15’ to 24’ when open and prices range from $8,000 to over $20,000.

Travel Trailers

The Travel Trailer is the most popular model trailer because there are so many models and floor plans that can accommodate 2 to 8 people comfortably.

As with other towable trailers, a travel trailer allows you to unhook from the tow vehicle and use it to travel around the area. Travel trailers measure in size from 15’ to 37’ and offer all the comforts of home.

Prices range from $15,000 to over $80,000. As you’ll see in the show, Mark touches on other types of trailers including Hybrid models and Toy Haulers, Ultra-light models and even teardrops. Rollin' On TV recently reviewed several travel trailers like the Forest River R-Pod, Jayco Jay Feather and Jayco Hummingbird travel trailers.

5th wheel trailer

5th Wheel Travel Trailers, RV TV Show, types of rvsThis model has a space that extends over the pickup bed and offers the most space of virtually any RV. 5th wheel trailers measure in size from 21’ to 40’ and require a special type of hitch installed in the bed of the truck.

Prices for 5th wheels can range from $20,000 to well over $150,000.

Park Model Trailer

Park Model RVs for seasonal camping, RV TV Show, types of rvsThis next model is one people don’t often think about and that is the Recreational or Park Model trailer.

The Recreation Vehicle Industry Association (RVIA) defines park model RVs as “a unique trailer-type RV that is designed to provide temporary accommodation for recreation, camping or seasonal use.” According to the RVIA, nearly 70 percent of park model RV owners locate their unit within several hours’ drive time from their primary residences and use them for weekend camping trips.

Prices range from $25,000 to over $100,000 and there are numerous models and floor plans available.

The Truck Camper

The last unit in the towable category is the Truck Camper. Truck Campers are loaded and secured to the bed of a pickup truck and will give you the ability to get to places other towables can't get to. Truck campers come in various sizes and floor plans and range in 8’ to 12’ models.

types of rvs, Truck Camper RVs are good for off-roading and getting into tight spots.Like trailers, some truck campers come with an over-the-cab sleeping area and many models today offer slide-outs.

Motorized RVs

In the ‘motorized category” there are three types of models… Type A, B, and C. Type A’s are the largest and most luxurious type of motorhome and range in size from 25’ to 45’.

Class A's are built on specially designed or bus chassis with either gas or diesel power. One handy feature of a class A is that you have access to all the amenities including the kitchen and bathroom while traveling. Most motorhomes can sleep from two to six people comfortably and range in price from $70,000 to well over $500,000. Some high-end bus conversions can cost well over a million dollars.

Class B is the smallest of all the motorhomes but come equipped with many of the amenities of larger models but in a compact space. Type B’s are easier to maneuver and park, more fuel efficient and can be used as a second vehicle. Type B’s are well suited for two people but some models will accommodate four reasonably comfortable. Type B’s are built on an assortment of vehicle chassis and can be either gas or diesel powered. Class C Motorhome, types of rvsType C motorhomes

Type C motorhomes (often referred to as “mini-motorhomes’) are built on a cut-away van chassis and can range in size from 20’ to 37’. Class C’s are the units you see that often have an area extended over the vehicle cab. This additional sleeping area makes the class C a good choice for families. Some models can sleep up to six or eight people. Prices can range fro $60,000 to over $100,000.
